Tsho Rolpa Glof Risk Reduction Project

Himal Hydro undertook the construction of lined chanal with a gate structure for controlled discharge of water to lower the water level of Tsho Rolpa, the largest glacier lake of Nepal, to reduce the risk of GLOF (glacier lake out brust flood). Tsho Rolpa glacier lake is situated at an altitude of 4600 meters (15000 ft) from the mean see level. The site is reachable only after 7 days of trek.

The company reduced immediately and tangibly the water level in Tsho Rolpa by minimum of 3 m and eliminated the risk of breach forming in a natural moraine dam at the glacier lake. This reduced the risk of GLOF occuring downstream in the Rolwalling, Tamakoshi and Bhotekoshi in Dolakha district. It saves the life and properties with billion of dollors.

The project included construction of an open channel, trapezoidal in cross section with 6.4 m width at the bottom and designed to cater 14.6m3/s discharge. Gate structure is designed to regulate the water flow if necessary.
